The Hanen Program ® for parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Social Communication Difficulties

Your child is a good fit for the More than Words® Program if they:  

  • Are 0-6 years of age

  • Have a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Struggle with communication and play skills

  • Are not yet communicating with words

  • Are just starting to communicate with words

  • Are starting to communicate in short sentences


How does this online program work?  

The Hanen More than Words® Online Program is delivered over the computer. 

You will access the weekly program from the comfort of your own home.  During weekly sessions, you will learn valuable skills and tools to help you interact/communicate better with your child at home.  Three times throughout the course of the workshop, you will also meet one-on-one with the instructor and your child.  You will then have a chance to practice the strategies you have learned so far in the program with the instructor present to help you make the most of your interactions with your child.  

What will you learn in the program?

The More than Words® Program was designed to help parents work on social communication and play skills at home in their everyday environment.  Throughout the course, you will learn the following:  

  • Your child’s current communication stage

  • How to set appropriate communication and play goals for your child

  • How to engage your child in enjoyable interactions during everyday activities

  • How to make interactions with your child last longer, increasing learning opportunities

  • How to talk so that your child understands you

  • Strategies for developing your child’s play skills

  • Strategies that help your child make friends

What is included in the Program?  

  • 8 - Group sessions (Each session is approximately 2 - 2.5 hours in length)

  • 1 - Pre-Program Consultation (One-on-one session with the instructor)

  • 3 - Video-Feedback Sessions (One-on-one coaching sessions with the instructor)

  • 1 - More than Words® Guidebook

  • Program binder with all the handouts you will need through the program

What are the technical requirements for the program?

  • Laptop or Desktop Computer or iPad (smartphones do not have a large enough screen)

  • Access to Zoom Program

  • High speed internet

  • Email access

  • Adobe Reader (free install) to fill out online documents *Documents may also be filled out by hand and scanned/sent into the instructor


What is the investment for the program?  

  • The program fee is $1375

  • Full payment is required to hold your place in the workshop. Receipts will be issued once you pay for the program. You may be able to claim this service through your health care benefits, but as each plan is different you will need to check with your provider.

  • Please note that the program fee is refundable, less a $50 cancellation fee up until one week before the program’s start date. Cancellations made within a week of the program WILL NOT BE REFUNDED.

  • If, in the chance the program is canceled due to not enough participants registering for the program, a full refund will be provided.

  • The cost of this program may be covered by Saskatchewan’s Individualized Autism Funding.
